Going through an addiction is challenging in every way – mentally, physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually. Therefore, you can’t heal from an addiction in a few weeks or months. Recovery is a lifelong experience that you must commit to. And the first step in the process is admitting your need for help and finding a treatment center that meets your needs.
One of the main barriers to rehab is cost. Drug and alcohol treatment can cost anywhere from $2,000 to $25,000+. In fact, some residential treatment centers with extended programs will cost you nearly $80,000! The cost of treatment depends on many factors, including the type of program, the length of treatment, the amenities offered and the location.
Fortunately, insurance does help cover the costs of addiction treatment. How much help you get depends on the type of plan you have and the rehab center you choose.
NYSHIP Insurance: What is it and Who Gets It?
NYSHIP is a unique Empire health insurance plan established in 1957, exclusively designed to provide coverage to public employers and employees in the state of New York. After its launch, the program extended its services to local governments and school districts. Today, over 800 government agencies use NYSHIP.
NYSHIP provides coverage to over one million people. Those who are eligible for this coverage can choose between an NYSHIP HMO or the Empire Plan. Both plans provide coverage for physician bills, hospital services, prescription drugs and substance use treatment services.
What Addiction Treatment Services are Covered Under NYSHIP?
NYSHIP has many different options and benefits. Depending on your specific plan, you can expect partial or full coverage for rehabilitation services. Always check with the treatment center to make sure they accept NYSHIP.
Your NYSHIP HMO or Empire Plan may include the following services:
- Inpatient treatment. NYSHIP covers care at an inpatient facility. You will be responsible for a coinsurance payment of 10% until you reach the allowable maximum amount of your annual combined coinsurance.
- Outpatient treatment. Outpatient programs offer more freedom and are typically less expensive than inpatient programs. NYSHIP provides coverage for structured outpatient care.
- Family counseling. Addiction affects the family unit – not just the individual. To ensure that everyone has access to support, NYSHIP covers up to 20 family counseling services a year.
- Prescription medications. Medications that are prescribed as part of your inpatient treatment program or partial hospitalization program may also be covered under NYSHIP.
